Attention from Europe, the delays through customs (up to 45 minutes) which can miss a match! On board, the service is reduced to its simplest and most benefits are paid. Checked baggage is also paid on almost all domestic routes! Are advised to arrive well in advance for boarding, because of security measures surrounding U.S. airports since September 11, 2001.

The car

This is the ideal way to travel, especially as gasoline is relatively inexpensive. That said, parking in large cities (Miami head) is irritating and cause you, in addition to nodes in the brain, a good twist in your budget.Find an address in Florida is not always simple. Sometimes we go from one city to another without clear guidance, particularly north of Miami where successive settlements, or near the urban entity Tampa - St. Petersburg. And for simplicity, it is sometimes the same path that passes through these towns and takes the name of track south (S) or north track (N) depending on its location in the city crossing.- Parking in the city: in some major cities (Miami head), free parking is a challenge, because even along the streets, there are parking meters and ticket machines everywhere, to be nurtured every day, sometimes even late into the evening! However, in other cities, parking is a breeze, including in the center.

Car rental in Florida

To lead on U.S. soil: the national driving license is sufficient but the international license may be required even if sometimes it is rare (although esr rarely ask, it is theoretically required in the Florida State). Better to be issued by a Prefecture (free).- It is difficult if not impossible to rent a car if one is under 21 years, and even 25 years for large companies. In the best case, in Florida, the age of 25 should take insurance "Young Drivers" that costs about $ 25 per day. μ- The national license is sufficient in principle to the United States, but the state of Florida requires a priori an international license. As a precaution, it is better to make a grant by the prefecture (it's free).

Motorway tolls

Some sections of motorway are paying. There are several islands near the coast, in cities of Orlando and Miami. Highway (US 75) that connects Naples to Fort Lauderdale as well as between Orlando and Miami are also paid.We can pay in cash at the counters. Otherwise, most major car rental agencies offer the Pass 24, which can switch automatically to the tolls of lanes.Caution: on these routes, mostly, there is no barrier, and only slow vehicles. Make no mistake queue! If you do not pass the 24, the vehicle will be flashed and the hefty fine! Most tolls are not expensive (about $ 1-2; plan for small change). However, if you plan to travel a lot around Miami and Orlando, or to travel between two cities, the Pass 24 (almost $ 20 per week) is interesting and there is no tail to the tolls!

The bus

In Florida, the Greyhound bus connections between major cities: Jacksonville, Orlando, Daytona, St. Augustine, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Naples, Key West ..

The train

Amtrak: two trains, the Silver Meteor and Silver Star, connecting New York to Florida via Georgia. Two daily in both directions (one in the late morning and one mid-afternoon from Penn Station in New York in the morning departures from Miami). Have between 24 and 31h trip anyway! In Florida, they go through Jacksonville, Deland, Winter Park, Orlando, Kissimmee, Winter Haven, Sebring, West Palm Beach, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. When one is near and that has not seen in a while, it's a hug (the hug) prevails. They are hugging and slapping on the back. The best way to greet someone is still to shake his hand.- When arriving at a restaurant, we will not install on any table, unless the sign "Please seat yourself" invites you to do so. Therefore expected to be placed.- In restaurants and cafes, do not expect a European service, kind of water, teaspoon for coffee, etc.. Here is the effectiveness and efficiency prevail. Do not be surprised to be served an espresso in a mug or have the bill before the end of the meal.- The remains small: if, in a restaurant, you struggle to finish what you ordered, do not scruple to ask a tray to carry the remains of your meal, everyone does.- Air conditioning: the Americans have a habit of pushing the air conditioner thoroughly in most public places (restaurants for example). On nice days, so have a sweater on you to avoid thermal shock.- The traffic is more respected than ours. The car is mostly seen as a means of locomotion, not as a racer. When two lines come together on one, each going to turn.If someone is in front of a crosswalk, the cars stop automatically to let him pass.- The dog poop: the gathering, which appears as a simple, clear and Civic United States, has decidedly difficult to implement in France.- The toilet public (restrooms) are almost always free and well maintained. You will find in each Visitor Center, bus stations, service stations, major shopping centers and department stores, or in hotel lobbies and cafeterias. Ask, we will never say no, unless a sign says not "Customers Only".- In smaller campsites in some national parks, the payment is made by an envelope system. We put the amount requested in the envelope that is slipped into the box.- In the same vein, to buy your newspaper, there are vending machines. Simply drag the sum and a small door opens to let you take your life.- The report of the money Americans often tend to annoy foreigners. Similarly, the insistence of permanent servers in restaurants or vendors to want to spend is irritating in the long run.- Americans are lenders. They will not hesitate, after doing a bit of your knowledge, to lend you their car and leave you the keys to their house.- Patriotism The flag and national anthem are the essential backbone links of the various peoples that make up the American people.- It's no use screaming as soon as something does not go the way we want. You can be accused of disrespect vis-à-vis or even aggressive. Everything is negotiated and pleads. However, if you are within your rights, you will be immediately refunded. Do not you dare raise your voice with a policeman, you would end up straight into the post.- Cultural misunderstandings: Americans like contacts and are approachable. But past the first contact, the analysis of this situation is to tell the French that Americans are superficial. Conversely, the Americans we would find cold and distant.

National Parks

National Parks (National Parks) and the National Monuments (National Monuments) are strictly protected areas. In fact, no major differences between them. The former are created after a vote in Congress, the latter are by the decree signed by the President of the United States. They are managed by the same administration, and strict regulations to preserve any human-caused degradation ($ 50 fine if you pick up dead wood).Yet Americans have managed to incorporate all the amenities available in rural housing: one can spend the night in a hut improved under a tent or a caravan. This disease, usually tropical, gaining ground to the north.Anyway, in the month of May until early winter, you should avoid mosquito bites throughout the country: skin repellents 30-50% DEET, impregnation of clothing or nets.

Dangers and enquiquinements- The main dangers come from certain neighborhoods in Miami. Do not hang around at night in the Downtown and in red light districts where ethnic minorities live in very poor and where your presence may be considered an insult.- In general, do not leave anything in your car, because rental cars are quickly spotted and sometimes forced. Quick Tip: when you park, leave visible inside your trunk by removing the flap, if possible.Similarly, if you opt for modest motels, avoid leaving valuables when leaving your room. Located on the southern tip, the edge of the ocean, it enjoys an ideal location. Orlando is the nearby town of all amusement parks. Saint Augustine, who boasts of being the oldest city in the United States, attracts lovers of old buildings. On the west coast of Florida, the cities are more numerous and less touristy. The beaches are beautiful, sometimes deserted, and nature is more prevalent. It is true that Florida has many natural resources: 13 500 km of coastline, 30,000 lakes, 1,711 streams and rivers, 105 state parks ...As for cities, from north to south, we retain Pensacola, located on a very wild coast and adjacent marshes at the mouth of the Apalachicola River. Pensacola to Apalachee Bay, the sandy beaches are plentiful. Then, St. Petersburg and Tampa are the two most important cities of the west coast, which share the Tampa Bay area.At South Florida, the swamps of Everglades National Park recall the distant past of land invaded by water. Finally, the Florida Keys has over a thousand islands and islets, mostly uninhabited. Key West at its end, is the southernmost continental United States.

Climate : Florida, which has a subtropical climate, is a special case in the United States. Summer is hot and humid, characterized by short and heavy rains. Winter is warm and dry. In spring and autumn, the weather is the gentle but also to moisture.Florida is the only state that can boast of having the sun all year. The best season is winter and spring (except on the northwest coast, where the trend is reversed). But beware of major temperature changes sometimes in January or February.

Cyclones (hurricanes):The region suffers often their passage, the most infamous being Andrew (August 1992).If you're camping, at the slightest suspicious sign, it is advisable to store equipment and to take refuge at the hotel, staff are aware of the maneuvers to be followed in an emergency. Alerts are moving from hurricane watch (hurricane hazard in 36h), in hurricane warning (arrival within 24 hours). At this level of alert, the authorities decreed, in the worst cases, the order to evacuate the coast. We also suggest to postpone your domestic flights in bad weather, because companies do not hesitate to go, even in weather staggering. In case you are caught in a cyclone, it is best to put you away in a cellar (evacuate tent, car, timber house, and stay away from windows).Occasionally also, the TV broadcasts - especially in the Keys - alerts at waterspout, these small local tornadoes, actually whirls that form on the sea and run out quickly. It should still exercise caution if you're on the road.

Florida Food and Drink

The sea and marshes, of course, offer products that amazing, prepared with care, provide tasty dishes: the alligator farm (to taste vaguely reminiscent of that of chicken) and a host of fish: snapper (a sort of bream ), group (grouper), pompano, mahi-mahi (dolphin fish, which, rest assured, has nothing to do with the dolphin), wahoo, marlin, swordfish (Swordfish). But you'll struggle to see the whole fish on the plate: the Americans are fond of donuts, frying, breading ... and fish is no exception. This is also true for the alligator, chicken, shellfish, cheese ... Fish is also served filet marinated and fried, and it is delicious, especially in salads.Eat well, the conch (a type of conch served in soup - chowder - or fries, again - battered), the crab claws, served with melted butter or a mustard sauce (stone crab season from October to May) . There are also oysters (oysters) for thick shells. The problem is that Americans are sometimes shucked and rinsed with tap water, and suddenly they lose their taste. Try them instead cooked in sauce.Floridians are also the kings of salads. Copious, colorful, full of sunshine and imagination, they are, in our opinion, the best approach to lunchtime. Fruit salads, unfortunately more expensive, are just as beautiful.About desserts, Key lime pie is a must: this tart lemon meringue sometimes (the file is a small lime) can be stunning when it is successful, but beware the calories ...With the variety of products from Florida is the diversity of cuisines, corresponding to the different nationalities who have migrated here. Florida is a huge producer of fruit, including citrus (two-thirds of the country's production), sugar cane and dairy cattle. The economic boom of that State only really began with the arrival of Henry Flagler. At the very end of the nineteenth century, he built luxurious palaces that connected it by rail. Tourism was born. Currently, The Sunshine State is the first tourist destination in the United States, and also one of the first in the world with 80 million visitors in 2010.If Florida is hit by the economic crisis, tourism manages to maintain its good level, thanks to the influx of European holidaymakers attracted by the "good value" of the United States currently.Result of a favorable fiscal policy (no wealth tax in Florida), the 15th largest economy in the world attracts foreign investment.
